After engaging and researching several online dating sites, I’ve come to some conclusions/insights about how this method can be not only helpful in finding yourself a date, (amongst other things) but also can be quite THERAPEUTIC in ways we might not realize. Therefore, I feel compelled to share some insight with you so that the next time you are on line and perhaps are disappointed you haven’t found the love of your life, you can at least remember that it is still helping you and that you might also be possibly gaining some serious therapeutic benefits by engaging in online dating behavior.

“Just for the record” my discoveries are based on professional and personal interviews I have done with clients and friends. These are my research findings and beliefs but should not be seen as my giving therapy nor are measured scientifically nor are data driven.

Top Ten Reasons Online Dating is therapeutic.

1. Challenges your comfort zone and makes you GROW!

2. Focuses your MIND on getting what you want

3. HELPS TO DEFINE your “bottom line”, and helps you to make boundaries

4. Makes you engage: this is good for people whom are shy and allows you to be open and expressive

5. Highlights your positive attributes. (good for the ego, and for the soul)

6. Highlights your negative attributes and makes you contemplate changes.

7. Creates honesty and checks your integrity

I used to love that movie, “Romancing the Stone”, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088011/mainly not for the dialog, but because it shows how our ideas of relationships back in the 80′s was primary still based on traditional roles. Woman is in distress, man saves woman…and they sail around the world. But, does that really happen? Hmmm, not so much. On the contrary, what i have have been seeing in my practice is just the opposite. Many couples are switching roles, man stays home, woman goes to work and I’m seeing people work that out to their advantage. My basic point is that people *are* changing. Roles *are* changing and from all of the media that still relies upon old antics to define current culture, I wanted to be one who is actually witnessing the change. I am encouraged about this because I am fortunate to work with clientele who are for the most part, evolving. For the rest of the nation, I’m not so sure but would be happy to take a poll. However, here in the Bay area, women are seizing the day and men are happy to help. If all of that is good then what about this scenario still seems antiquated? Although both women and men are finding more peace in the current climate of marriage and family at home and at work is it true that roles are still the same in the bedroom? That is a good question and will be answered in my next post. Think about it: what do you think happens? Feel free to write in and post your comments.

They are opening up everywhere. Why? There is a great demand for women to reclaim their power and thrive. My gut feeling is that I completely believe in this theory of having women become more empowered. However i would beg the question as to whatever happened to us that we weren’t? General public uses “reclaim” their power, but my instinct and the way I work is that the woman *already* has power, she just needs to express it. I don’t believe women are needing to feel empowered because they don’t have it in them and somehow have to go and get it, but rather they *already* have it and now just need a place to express it. Due to this, I am forming a Sex Goddess Workshop where women will be supported and encouraged to express themselves safely, effectively, and with some G-d damn booty bumping! I’m serious. What is the purpose of female empowerment/sexual expression if you can’t stick your booty out and say, “HELLS YEAH!”. Okay, so you get the picture. In the meantime, contact me for more details or click on my webpage. You’ll be happy you did it! Go get your girl on now! -Your admirer , alison

The Situation

After counseling many couples and individuals, I have come to hear similar questions being asked across the board. I will help you answer some of those questions, however I will need your help in doing so. The next few posts will be about common couples questions that I keep hearing. Instead of my answering them for you, I would like you to write in (or privately) about what really *gets* you. What I mean, is what in specific are you experiencing as a problem? For instance, one couple asked, “We have married/together/co-habitating for years but our sexual expressions are just not like they used to be.

The question: How can we get back the spark we once had?

my partner and I (no matter if gay, straight, bi) love each other, however we have lost our sexual chemistry. It’s not as if it’s not there, it just seems like we don’t have the a) time, b) energy, c) drive/ambition anymore. What should we do?

The exercise:

1)Begin by writing down your own sexual/historical journey.

a) Start by remembering your very first kiss. Describe what it felt like and be specific.

b) As you progressed through life, what were your sexual relationship like? Were they quick and dirty, long and succulent, bumpy like rocky road? Describe just a few you remember.

c) List all the times you felt that “spark” during those relationships and all the times you did not.

b) Lastly, write down what happened as a result in that particular relationship.( i.e. how did it move forward, or did it? What were your feelings about the relationship then? Is there anything you would have done differently?)

The answer:

Words from the Source:

I am grateful every day that I have the chance to witness couples, individuals and groups work in their personal process toward fulfilling their desires to become better lovers, friends, and to be open to new possibilities that await them. Before i give you details on how to make your relationship successful, I would like to first invite you to start at the beginning to get a feel of where you land in the sexuality spectrum.

SEX THERAPY IS A:

way for someone to come forward and talk about their own relationship to their own sexual identity. (That is my definition). What that means #1) is that sex therapy DOES NOT mean something is WRONG with you. Let’s get that straight. #2) You don’t have to have some sort of perverted or strange FETISH to come and talk with us. You can be NORMAL (whatever that is) and STILL come and talk about SEX. ( I like spelling that out for you). #3) Sex therapy is about EXPRESSION of REPRESSION. That means whatever you ARE NOT saying is holding, keeping, stagnating in your body and not allowing you to be FREE, or to RELEASE your emotions in REAL time. REPRESSION hold you hostage UNTIL you come to a therapist to help you RELEASE your unwanted trauma, emotions or your personal STUFF. got it? good.

.. has earned the reputation of a sex positive culture. But, has it? Of course, there is gay pride and rip-roaring celebratory confetti throwing motorcycle beer drinking street festivals, but what is really underneath all of rainbow cheer? After living here for almost fifteen years, I have discovered a secret that really is no secret. That secret is that most people even after given full rights, (even a full day or a fully blocked off street) to say, “I’m out and I’m proud”are to some degree still filled with much too much pain and sadness. I’m not just talking about queers here folks. I’m talking straight, gay or whomever. There is a lot of shame in our city and it doesn’t stop south of market. Shame is one of the feelings that is common and comes up in a therapeutic context along with the full spectrum of emotions that come from sharing what your feelings are especially in regards to what is going on sexually with you both personally and in partnership.

Good news is that is where we come in! Let us help and let us help while soothing your senses, calming your nerves and all the while having some fun as well. San francisco Sex Therapy and Couples Counseling Center is a new way of doing therapy. We combine the art of comfort with the science of therapy. That means we get the job done, but we do it with grace, compassion and at your pace, with style, elegance and most of all with a smile and a warm snuggly san francisco hug. (only upon request of course).

So, no matter what your mood, your emotion, your attitude for the day, we will take you like you are. Just give us a ring and we’re waiting for you!
